VGM (Verified Gross Mass)
The certified total weight of a packed container required under SOLAS before loading on a vessel. Shippers must provide VGM to the carrier; inaccurate VGM can result in fines or loading refusal.

VGM is the verified gross mass of a packed container — the combined weight of the cargo, packaging, dunnage, and the container tare. Under the SOLAS convention the shipper must declare it to the carrier and terminal before loading, and a container without a VGM must not be loaded onto the vessel. Two methods are permitted: weighing the packed, sealed container, or weighing each item and adding the certified tare weight. The requirement followed a series of incidents involving misdeclared container weights affecting vessel stability and stack loads. The declaration must be signed by the shipper named on the bill of lading.
