Shipping Modes
Port of Loading (POL)
The port where cargo is loaded onto the vessel for ocean export. Named on the bill of lading and used in transit time and Incoterm calculations.
In depth
The port of loading (POL) is where the ocean carrier takes custody of the container for the main sea leg. Incoterms reference POL for risk transfer (FOB, CFR, CIF). Schedules, cut-offs, and documentation must reference the correct POL code (UN/LOCODE).
Key points
- Use official port name and UN/LOCODE on documents
- Cut-off times (CY, VGM, documentation) apply at POL
- Inland factory may be far from POL: plan pre-carriage
- Transshipment services may still show initial POL on B/L
