CBM (Cubic Metre)

Illustration for CBM (Cubic Metre), Pricing & Surcharges

A unit of volume used to price LCL ocean freight and calculate chargeable weight. Calculated as length × width × height in metres.

In depth

Cubic metres drive LCL ocean quotes and warehouse storage. Measure each package’s external dimensions in metres and multiply L × W × H. Carriers may re-weigh and re-measure at the CFS: discrepancies lead to billing adjustments.

Key points

  • Always use outer carton dimensions including pallet if shipped on pallet
  • Compare CBM-based cost vs upgrading to a 20ft FCL at your volume break
  • Air freight uses volumetric weight: related but different divisor
  • Round up honestly: CFS remeasurement is common
